Hi I need help understanding what my husband believes.  He says that speaking in tongues is of the Devil.
He loves Pastor Murray and says that he has to protect our son from me because I'm worshipping Satan, because I speak in tongues. I'm very concerned, I have read some of your article from 2007, do u have anything else or more up to date to prove to him that this man is not right!

Hi Jennifer,

That is a very difficult situation.  Any proof is only going to work to the degree that someone is willing to listen.  As far as I recall Arnold Murray attributed tongues to the "flesh."  I don't remember for sure if he actually said it was demonic.  I'm going to have to dig through my tapes and see what I can come up with.  I'm not totally sure because I think that back when I was a student of Shepherd's Chapel I did not want to think  my own dear father had done something devilish to me.  From my first days, my father prayed over me in tongues, very frequently.  And when I was a student of Murray I tried to convince him it was not of God.  Now that I know better I'm glad I never said it was of the devil.

I wonder what kind of demonic power your husband thinks you have.  If he prays for your son in his way, and you pray for the child in tongues, is that going to overpower his "spirit filled" prayers?  It does not make a lot of sense to me.   For the most part nobody ever cares more about their kids than their mother.  It just sounds irrational.

I don't have a zinger answer for you to "prove" that tongues are the evidence of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  My greatest proof is that when I received tongues I was calling on the name of Jesus Christ, not Beelzebub.   What is your husband's proof that he has the Holy Spirit?  Proving something to someone who already "knows" he is right and won't listen is a tall order, so your husband definitely needs prayer.  Any teacher that leads people away from receiving the Holy Spirit is not going to be good for anyone.

Arnold Murray is a proven false prophet, there are many ways to discredit him.  And I will go dig that tape on tongues of his out an listen to it, and if I find anything useful I will send it to you. I suspect your husband is going too far.  I thought Murray restrained himself from actually saying tongues were demonic.  If we can get your husband past that it might help.

In the meantime I might recommend my study in Acts http://oraclesofgod.org/studies/44_Acts/

Especially the first few chapters, but also the rest.  You may hear something in there that you may find useful.  I also have this email exchange http://www.oraclesofgod.org/emails/email020.htm defending tongues.

I'll get back to you soon, If you have any further questions feel free to write, I am at your service.

Sincerely,
Paul Stringini

Hi Emailer #250,
I just got done listening to Arnold Murray's teaching on tongues again.  Several times in the teaching he repeats that if you don't agree with him "we can still be friends."  Murray was definitely against speaking in tongues, and he does make some contradictory statements implying that if the tongues are not of God then they must be of the devil. This is pretty typical of him, he teaches out of both sides of his mouth giving people two different perspectives. On one hand, he will suggest that tongues might be of the devil, but on the other he will say "we can still be friends."  How are people supposed to know what to do with that sort of opinion? I never recall Pastor Murray saying it was Demonic, but after listening, it would not surprise me if he did say that somewhere else. I don't regularly listen to Murray anymore, one can only take so much.  If you want, I can send you the teaching, it is an hour and a half but the file is small enough to send in an email.    Ultimately, it doesn't really matter what that false teacher says, but you have to deal with your husband.  Let me know if you would like me to send you what Murray says, and if there is anything else I can do for you, I am at your service.

Sincerely,
Paul Stringini
